The Woodson Sharks may be new to the South Suburban Swim League in 2009, but the Sharks have proved they have quite a bite in the pool, as they made the Paola Piranhas their lastest victim on Saturday, June 20 at the Paola Family Pool.
The Sharks unleashed an impressive array of swimmers in all age groups to easily take the team competition by a 361 to 137 count. The Sharks were able to silence the Piranhas 15 and over boys dynamic duo of Alex Weatherbie and Jared Auten, with a talented group of upper age group swimmers of their own.
The Piranhas 13 and 14 year old super twosome of Kaylee Farmer and Katie Jo Kirk were able to break through against the Sharks, leading their Medley Relay and Freestyle Relay teams to victories, the only relay points for the Piranhas on the day. Kirk, Farmer and Mollie Hart swept the 50 yard freestyle, and Farmer, Kirk and Michelle Macke swept the 50 yard Butterfly. Farmer took first place in the 50 yard backstroke and Hart took the top spot in the 200 yard Individual Medley.
In the 13-14 year old Boys age group, Patrick Kennedy had a good day, with first places in the 50 yard breast stroke and back stroke and a second place in the 200 yard IM.
While Weatherbie and Auten were shut out of the first place spot for the Piranhas, they did hold their own against the Sharks combo of Truman State and University of Missouri swimmers. Weatherbie and Auten placed second and third in the 50 yard freestyle as the Sharks Schlotzhauer out dueled Weatherbie to take the race by .28 hundreths of a second in what could be best described as a photo finish.
Auten and Gus Hart finished second and third in the 50 yard butterfly, as the Sharks “Weezy” Hernandez out touched Auten to a take the first place ribbon by three quarters of a second. Weatherbie and Hernandez dueled in the 50 yard breast stroke with the Woodson swimmer coming out on top in a three and a half second victory. Weatherbie and Schlotzhauer went one two in the backstroke, as Weatherbie again finished second to the Woodson swimmer. Both Hernandez and Schlotzhauer got the best of Auten in the final individual event of the day, as he finished in the third position, being narrowly edged by Schlotzhauer by a second and a half in the 200 yard Individual Medley.
The Piranhas return to the pool on Saturday, June 27, as they travel to perennial league powerhouse Harrisonville and the Sharks travel to Louisburg to take on the Barracudas.
