Dolphins are swept away by Sharks
The Golden Valley Dolphins got the first taste of the Woodson Sharks in the 2009 South Suburban Swim League opener for both teams on Saturday, June 13, 2009 in Clinton, and found out the Sharks were going to be a force to be dealt with this season. The Sharks, new to the league this year took a huge bite out of the Dolphins and came away with an easy victory.
The Dolphins were not without bright moments in the meet, sweeping all three places in the 9-10 Girls 50 meter Butterfly with S. Vernon leading the way, followed by Em Staashelm and E. Balke. The 11-12 year old Girls swept the 50 meter Butterfly with C. Wetzel, C. Sizemore, K. Barr and C. DesCombs taking the top four places in the event. The 8 & Under Girls swept the 25 meter Backstroke with S. Williams taking first, G. Harrelson taking second and M. Swaters taking third.
The 8 & Under Girls Freestyle relay team of K. Mitchell, S. Sharman, G. Harrelson and S. Williams, and the 9-10 Girls Freestyle relay team of H. Reid, Em. Staashelm, E. Balke and S. Vernon also took first place ribbons.
The Dolphins return to the pool on Saturday, June 20, 2009 as they take on perennial SSSL powerhouse Harrisonville.
Dolphins overmatched by AquaCats
The Golden Valley Dolphins found choppy waters as they took on perennial South Suburban Swim League powerhouse Harrisonville on Saturday, June 20, 2009.
The Dolphins came up on the short end of a 422-85 team score, as Golden Valley was no match for the AquaCats.
Jessica Journey had another good day in the water, picking up a first place in the 15 and over, 50 meter freestyle, a second place in the 15 and over, 50 meter butterfly and a third place in the 15 and over, 50 meter backstroke.
Macey Mitchell picked up third place finishes in the Girls 9-10, 50 meter breast stroke and back stroke.
On the boys side of the competition, Joey Naber picked up first place ribbons in three events. Swimming in the Boys 8 & Under, 25 meter division, Naber won the freestyle, breast stroke and backstroke.
Other first place finishers for the Dolphins were, Christina DesCombes in the Girls 11-12 year old 50 meter butterfly and breast stroke; Derek Jones in the Boys 11-12 year old 50 meter butterfly; Jesse Camden in the Boys 13-14 50 meter butterfly; Camile Wetzel in the Girls 11-12 year old 50 meter backstroke; Ariel Hunt in the Girls 13-14 50 meter backstroke and Savannah Sharman in the Girls 8 & under 100 meter Individual Medley.
The Dolphins travel to Butler on Saturday, June 27, to take on the Torpedoes.

The Golden Valley Dolphins broke into the team win column in the third week of the South Suburban Swim League season, outswimming a Torpedo attack from Butler and racking up a 273-144 victory at Butler.
The Dolphins were able to gain some confidence heading into the second half of the SSSL summer season, as multiple swimmers took top spots in races. Joey Naber, swimming in the boys 8 & Under division took first place ribbons in the 25 meter Freestyle, Breaststroke and Backstroke; Gabe Suthoff took firsts in the boys 13-14 year old 50 meter Freestyle, Butterfly and Breaststroke; Sadie Vernon in the girls 9-10 year old division took home firsts in the 50 free and the 100 I.M. as well as a third in the 50 meter breaststroke; Christina DesCombes in the girls 11-12 year old division brought home firsts in the 50 free and 50 breast as well as a second in the 50 fly; Spencer Journey doubled with firsts in the 50 free and 200 I.M. in the boys 11-12 year old division as well as a second in the 50 breast; Janie Wetzel in the girls 13-14 year old division finished first in the 50 free and 50 breast and added a second in the 200 I.M.; Jessica Journey took firsts in the 50 free and 50 back in the Girls 15 and Over division and added a second in the 50 fly; and in the boys 15 and over division, Casey Wetzel took firsts in the 50 free and 200 I.M. an a third in the 50 breast; Todd DesCombes took second in the 50 free and added a first in the 50 breast and third place finisher in the 50 free Jake Barr also took a first place in the 50 back.
The Dolphins are off this week as is the rest of the league for the Independence Day holiday. They will return to action of Saturday, July 11, 2009 against Louisburg.
