Seniors again top Juniors in fundraiser
Big plays were the rule in the annual Junior vs Senior Powderpuff football game held Tuesday night, November 10, 2009 at Panther Stadium. The seniors once again came out on top in the game by a score of 28-19, but the real winner was charity, as the game collected canned goods and cash for Harvesters through Crosspoint Assembly of God Church. The event raised nearly $500 in cash and “a lot” of canned goods for the Harvesters program.
The game featured a spirited bunch of upstart juniors, trying to break a string of senior victories. This year’s seniors, who nearly pulled the upset last year were not to be denied. Both squads had outstanding athletes, with big play capability, and the teams demonstrated those abilities many times during the course of the game. In fact, the shortest scoring play of the game came on a 25 yard Timmie Morris run in the second half.
The Seniors opened the scoring on an outstanding 60 yard run by Kayla Offutt, it was the first of three long scoring runs by Offutt on the night. The extra point effort was no good and the seniors grabbed a 6-0 lead after one possession in the game.
The Juniors were not to be denied, as Mackenzie Hallstrom broke free for a 45 yard touchdown run about half way through the first half, to pull the Juniors into a 6-6 tie in the game. The point after touchdown try was no good, and the score remained tied.
With under two minutes to play in the first half, Offutt again broke free on a long touchdown run, this one of around 40 yards and following a failed extra point attempt, the Seniors held a 12-6 lead as the clock ran out on the first half.
The halftime show featured both junior and senior cheerleaders performing dance routines for the boisterous crowd and both squads. The Senior cheerleaders were forced to improvise a routine to a different song, with their original music would not play. Both cheerleading squads were spirited, and entertaining.
The Juniors opened the second half with the ball, and wasted no time in scoring, as Ashley Johnson took the first play from scrimmage in the second half and sprinted 80 yards for a touchdown, the point after touchdown was good, and with less than 30 seconds off the clock in the second half, the Juniors had grabbed a 13-12 lead.
The Seniors took over and went on a time consuming drive, with the 25 yard Morris run and a two point conversion putting the Seniors back on top in the game 20-13.
The Juniors could not sustain a drive on their next possession, and turned the ball over on downs to the seniors.
The Seniors scored an insurance touchdown with around two minutes to play in the game, as Offutt took a handoff on a double reverse from Morris and sprinted 53 yards to the end zone. The two point conversion was again good, and the Seniors had opened a comfortable 28-13 lead.
The Juniors were not going to go quietly though, as Hallstrom scored her second touchdown of the evening, this time on a 75 yard romp with just under a minute to play. The extra point attempt failed and the Senior lead was cut to 11 at 28-19.
That was as close at the Juniors would come, as the Seniors ran out the clock and celebrated their victory.
A punting competition was held at halftime of the event. Design4Sports, Sonic, McDonalds, Subway, Rockers Pharmacy and Blockbuster were sponsors for the Punting Contest prizes. The Paola Panther Robotics team used the concession stand as a fundraising activity.
