Trojans send six wrestlers to state

WLH0948 The Osawatomie Trojan Wrestlers continued their strong season, by placing six wrestlers in the state championship next weekend. The Trojans saw three wrestlers take first in their weight classes, as William Wilson, Zach Grimes and Garry Wilson all took home first place medals. Westin Shay, Montana Dunn and Bryan Switzer all took home third place finishes.

Wrestling at 160 pounds, William Wilson made short work of his time at the regional tournament, opening with pins in his first two matches first over Max Hopkins of Anderson County and then over Chandler King of Basehor-Linwood. In the championship match Wilson overpowered Colin Busby with a 13-5 major decision. He will take a 39-6 record into the state championship.

Zach Grimes needed four matches to take first place in the 189 pound weight class, but he wasted little time in dispatching of his opponents, defeating all four by pins, with none going further than the second period. Grimes, who will take an impressive 37-4 record to the state championship opened with a pin of Colin Dungan of Piper in the first period and followed that with pins of Andrew Turner of St. James Academy, Jordan Osladil of Ottawa and Caleb Clayton-Molby of Eudora all in the second period.

Rounding out the Trojan champions, Garry Wilson with a 17-10 record on the season advanced to the state championships on the strength of a first place finish in the 285 pound class. Wilson opened by pinning Cale Karigan in the second period and then went on to pin Hayden Chandler of DeSoto in the second period and taking the championship with a pin over Robert Retzer of Ottawa also in the second period.

In the 125 pound class, Westin Shay opened the tournament by defeating Garrett Brown of Ottawa and Medbor Chavez of Sumner Academy before losing to Symon Seaton of Basehor-Linwood. Shay bounced back by defeating Jackson Wiley of Eudora and Rory Haug of St. James Academy. Shay will take a 34-3 record to the state championship.

Montana Dunn, wrestling at 130 pounds won his first match against Aaron Morris of Piper before losing to Josh Hanson of Baldwin. Dunn finished the tournament with pins over Darren Nabus of Eudora and Miles Brown of Basehor-Linwood to take third. He will take a 30-7 record to the state championship.

WLH1008 Rounding out the state qualifiers for the Trojans was Bryan Switzer at 152 pounds. He won his first match over Brandon Ott of Ottawa before losing to Alex Orel of Bishop Ward. Switzer took third place with victories by fall over Heath Parmley of Baldwin and Jaysson Tansey of Sumner Academy. Switzer takes a 24-7 record to the state championship.

The Trojans had several wrestles with stellar records on the season fall just of achieving the goal of advancing to the state championships.

At 103 pounds, Bodhi Wallace finished season with a 30-5 record, opened the tournament by defeating Steven Sweeny of Ottawa by a fall with 23 seconds remaining in the first period. Wallace then was defeated by Mike Torrez of Basehor-Linwood and Andrew Morgan of Baldwin.

Sheldon Miller, wrestling at 135 pounds closed the season with an 18-7 record, opened the tournament with a 4-1 decision over Dalton Hladky of Eudora before dropping a 6-4 decision to Bryce Hood of Louisburg and a 4-3 decision to Bronson Moylan of Prairie View.

With a season record of 32-8, Dakota Hunke opened the 140 pound class with a victory of TJ Vielhauer of St. James Academy and then pinned Jake Abram of Baldwin, before dropping a 6-4 decision to Michael Kircher of Louisburg and a 3-2 decision to Shane Slyter of Spring Hill.

WLH1042 At 145 pounds, Chance Sinclair, with a season record of 29-15, opened the tournament with a pin of Justin Bauswell of Piper before dropping a 7-0 decision to Cole Cannon of St. James Academy. Sinclair bounced back with wins over Ethan Heincker of Spring Hill and Greg Schiffelbein of Baldwin. Joe Johnson of Basehor-Linwood dropped Sinclair out of the tournament with a 7-2 .

Gabe Castel, wrestling at 171 pounds opened the tournament with a loss to Billy Teters of Prairie View on a 9-8 decision but bounced back to take a 5-3 decision over Branden Phillips of Baldwin and then pinned Mark England of DeSoto before losing to Patrick Nicholson of Ottawa.

Wrestling at 215 pounds, Kole Jones dropped matches to Paul Morin of Anderson County and Airen Maxwell of Piper.
