Trojans take down Shawnee Mission East

WLH0064 It was a night of celebration for the Osawatomie Trojans, as they honored nine senior wrestlers and a senior manager and in the process completely dominated the Shawnee Mission East wrestlers 53-24 last Thursday, February 5, 2009.

In pre-match ceremonies the Trojans faithful thanked then nine seniors for their dedication to the Osawatomie program. Honored were; Gabe Castel, son of Gwen Dial; Montana Dunn, son of Patty dunn and the late Richard Dunn; Clint Hampton, son of Roger adn Brigitte Hampton; Dakota Hunke, son of Josette Pino and Randal Hunke; Sheldon Miller, son of Christien Anderson; Westin Shay, son of Lisa Hastings and Tom Shay; Bryan Switzer, son of Renee Switzer and Mike Ross and the late Ron Switzer; Garry Wilson, son of Jennifer Wilson and William Wilson, son of Jamie and Kimi Wilson. Also honored was senior manager, Tiffany Landess, daughter of Denny and Michelle Landess.

The matches started a little rocky for the Trojans, as Bodhi Wallace, wrestling at 103 pounds, was pinned at the 1:33 mark in the first period. The Trojans were open at 112 pounds and both teams were open at 119 pounds, so Shawnee Mission East jumped to a 12-0 lead in team points after those weight classes.

The Trojans wasted little time getting back into the match though, as Westin Shay, wrestling at 125 pounds jumped on top of Carter Kerr 9-2 in the first period, and then with 43.1 seconds remaining in the second period, Shay pinned his opponent and the Trojans were on the board trailing in team points 6-12.

Montana Dunn wrestling at 130 pounds was the next on the mat. Dunn shut his opponent, Chris Hasselwander out in the first two periods, taking a 4-0 lead after the first and a 7-0 lead after then second. Dunn got the Trojans six more team points as he pinned Hasselwander with 1:22 remaining in the final period and the team score was tied at 12-12.

East got back on the board in the next match as Clint Hampton at 135 pounds was pinned with 42.7 seconds remaining in the second period and Shawnee Mission East was back on top of the team scoring at 12-18.

Dakota Hunke wrestling at 140 pounds wasted little time getting the Trojans right back in the game, pinning Rhegg Delara of East with 34.1 seconds to go in the first period. Hunke’s victory tied the team score at 18-18.

The Trojans went back on top for good in the 145 pound class, as Chance Sinclair pinned Blake Hill of East at the 1:18 mark of the first period to put the Trojans up 24-18.

In the 152 pound class, Bryan Switzer took a decision over Blaine Hill of East, leading 7-1 after the first period, 15-1 after the second period, and stopping the match at the 1:31 mark of the third period when he took a 16-1 lead, upping the Trojan lead to 29-18.

William Wilson was the next on the mat at 160 ponds for the Trojans, and he wasted little time in dispatching his opponent David Hill on a fall with 1:27 to go in the second period. Wilson was ahead in points at the end of the first period 8-2 and his win gave the Trojans a 35-18 lead.

The only other blemish on the evening came at 171 pounds, as Gabe Castel lost on a fall at the 20.2 second mark in the first period. The loss came to Greg Guthrie of East and made the team score 35-24.

East was open at 189 pounds, giving Kole Jones the victory and the Trojans a 41-24 team advantage.

In the 215 pound class, Zack Grimes ran up advantages of 4-1 and 12-3 after the first and second periods, and then pinned his opponent Bert Jilka of East with 10.2 seconds remaining in the match, giving the Trojans a 47-24 lead.

In the final match of the evening, Trevor Needham put away his opponent Cole Morgan of East on a fall with 33.6 seconds remaining in the second period. The victory by Needham gave the Trojans a 53-24 team advantage in the varsity matches.
