For the second straight week, the Osawatomie Trojans found themselves trailing at the half, only to come back and win a close game as they downed the Tonganoxie Chieftans at Tonganoxie Saturday, September 11, by a final score of 36-33.
Tonganoxie opened the scoring in the game on a three yard run by Holloway and following the extra point the Trojans found themselves in an early hole once again trailing 7-0.
Jameson Greenwood took care of the deficit when he broke free on a 72 yard touchdown run, the Seth Jones extra point tied the score at 7-7 still in the first quarter.
Tonganoxie wasted little time getting back on top in the game, as Holloway broke free on a 74 yard touchdown run, and White added the extra point to give the Chieftans a 14-7 lead as the first quarter ended.
The Trojans scored twice before Tongie could get back on the scoreboard to take a 20-14 lead. The first score came on a Jones to Brandon Oakes seven yard pass, and the second came on a 13 yard run by Greenwood. The extra points on both scores were no good and the Trojans had taken a six point advantage.
Tonganoxie came back to tie the score before halftime on a five yard run by Carlisle and with the failed extra point the teams headed to the intermission with the score deadlocked at 20-20.
The Chieftans got on the board first in the third period, on a 42 yard Carlisle pass to Lindsay, and with the White PAT, Tongie held a 27-20 advantage.
Greenwood pulled the Trojans to within one on a one yard run and Jones added the two point conversion, and the Trojans were back on top 28-27 as the third quarter drew to a close.
Tonganoxie took a 33-28 lead in the fourth quarter on the strength of a 21 yard run by Maus, but the Trojans had one more comeback in them, as they scored what was the game winning touchdown on a six yard Jones to Dylon Needham pass play. Osawatomie added a two point conversion on a pass from Jones to Hunter Taylor for the final 36-33 margin.
The Trojans were lead offensively by Greenwood who had 229 yards rushing on 28 carries, Oakes had one carry for 32 yards, Jones had four carries for five yards and Johnson had one carry for four yards. In the passing department, Jones was 12-21 for 107 yards and two touchdowns. Needham and Taylor each caught three balls for 23 and 58 yards respectively. Oakes caught two passes for 15 yards and Daine Needham caught two passes for eight yards.
On the defensive side of the ball, Brant Johnson led the team with 14 tackles and Derrick Keuser was in on 10 tackles. The Trojans had nine penalties for 87 yards. Tonganoxie had 21 first downs to 16 for Osawatomie.
“Overall, our offense did good job,” said Trojan Head Coach Clint Bailey. “But we really need to work on our defense”
The Trojans will return to Lynn Dickey Field on Friday Night to take on the Mustangs from Iola in a 7:00 p.m. game.
