Tonganoxie downs Trojans 23-6

by Jeff Gulley

On a field already soaked from two days of rain, the Tonganoxie Cheiftains used their size and strength to dominate the line of scrimmage in a 23-6 win over Osawatomie Friday night.

The Trojans came into the game with a speed advantage but the soggy, muddy turf tipped the scales in the favor of the Cheiftains.

Both teams were scoreless after one quarter. Osawatomie running back Jameson Greenwood did convert a fake punt, the Trojans biggest play of the half. The first quarter was full of penalties. Tonganoxie had a long touchdown run called back because of a hold, and both teams struggled to hold onto the wet football.

In the second, Tonganoxie put together a long drive that ended with an Austin Holloway 3-yard touchdown run. Late in the half, Osawatomie was stopped on a run in its own end zone for a safety and the Trojans trailed 9-0 at the half.

In the third quarter, Tonganoxie again controlled the football on a long drive dominating the line of scrimmage. Zach Robinson scored on 10-yard run and the Osawatomie deficit was 15-0.

The Trojans got on the scoreboard in the fourth quarter. Following a Cheiftain turnover, Osawatomie quarterback Dylon Needham connected with Sean Callahan for an 11-yard touchdown pass.

Tonganoxie would score its final touchdown in the final seconds of the game.

Greenwood led the Trojans with 49 yards rushing. Bryan Switzer was the leading tackler with 15.

The Trojans are now 0-2 for the season and travel to Iola Friday night. Iola topped Central Heights in overtime Friday night.
