Third quarter fuels Trojans in win

The Osawatomie Trojan boys basketball team let the Anderson County Bulldogs hang around in the first half of their game at Garnett on Friday, February 5, 2010, but then buried the bone so to speak on any chances the Bulldogs had of pulling an upset with a 29 point outburst in the third quarter which sent the Trojans to an 18 point, 73-45 pasting of the home team.

WLH0461 “I though we had some trouble talking on defense and closing out towards the ball,” said Trojans Head Coach Darren Soucie. “In the second half, we did a much better job, but overall, our defense has to get better.”

Defense is the key for the Trojans, if they have designs on advancing beyond the sub-state tournament this year. Osawatomie has demonstrated the fact that on the offensive end of the floor they are able to match just about anyone in the area. But if they are to advance in post season play, they will need to clamp down defensively if the expected rematch of last year’s sub state championship game is to take place between the Trojans and Ottawa Cyclones.

If both teams take care of business down the stretch, the Trojans, currently with two losses should grab the top seed in the sub-state tournament, with the Cyclones, currently with three losses taking the number two spot. The Trojans have the advantage of hosting the sub-state tournament this year, and, with the exception of Ottawa and Fort Scott, the Trojans have played, and beaten every other team in the tournament. Spring Hill is the only team in the tourney that has topped the Trojans, but that was early in the season, and the Trojans have defeated the Broncos in their rematch game already this year.

But on this night, it was the Bulldogs turn to fall to the Trojans, but they did not go down without a fight, at least in the first quarter that is, as spirited play by Anderson County pushed them to a 16-15 first quarter lead. The Trojans slowly took control of the game in the second quarter, as their defense began to take ahold, and at the half, Osawatomie had seized a 32-25 lead.

But it was the third quarter that buried the Bulldogs, as the Trojans unleashed their offense, and clamped down on defense, putting 29 points on the board and allowing only 10 to break open the game at take a 61-35 lead at the end of the third quarter. In fact, the Trojans could have gone completely cold in the fourth quarter and still won the game handily, as they allowed the Bulldogs only 10 more points in the final eight minutes, while scoring 12 of their own to take the game by the final 73-45 margin.

The Trojans put five players in double figures on the evening, lead by Seth Jones with 17 points on six of seven field goals and five of five from the free throw line. Jacob Vail hit for 12 points, also on six of seven field goals. Spencer Booe and Brendan Soucie each had 11 points on the night. Booe hit his only field goal attempt, and was two of six from three point range while adding three free throws on three attempts to total his 11 points. Soucie was three of nine from the field and five of six from the free throw line. Tyler Wright hit two of four field goals and two of four from beyond the arc to total 10 points on the night.

As a team the Trojans shot 56% from the field on 22 of 39 shooting. They were four of 17 from three point range and hit 17 of 24 free throw attempts form 71%. Soucie was again big on the boards for the Trojans, pulling in 11 rebounds (1 offensive, 10 defensive); Jacob Vail grabbed nine boards to just miss a double, double also.

The Trojans dished out 16 assists, with Brandon Oakes handing out four to lead the team, with Soucie and Booe each having three assists. Osawatomie added 12 steals to balance out 11 turnovers on the night.

The Trojans will continue with Pioneer League play on Tuesday, February 9, 2010 as they travel to Prairie View to take on the Buffalos, and will then host the Jayhawk Linn Jayhawks on Friday night, February, 12, 2010.
