Trojans close strong in 55-41 victory

The Osawatomie Trojan boys basketball team shook off a pesky Central Height Viking team with an 18-11 advantage in the fourth quarter to record their 11th victory on the season against just two defeats on Tuesday night, February 2, 2010 at Osawatomie. The victory pushes the Trojans record in the Pioneer League to 3-0, it was the first league loss for the Vikings and only their third loss on the season against ten wins.

WLH0426 The Trojans jumped to a first quarter lead, outscoring Central Heights 15-11 in the opening period. Osawatomie added another 15 points in the second quarter and held the Vikings to only nine, to take a ten point 30-20 lead into the locker room at halftime.

The third quarter saw the Vikings work hard to get back into the game, as they took a 10-7 advantage in the quarter to slice the Trojans lead to only seven as the fourth quarter got underway. But the Trojans were not to be denied, as they turned up the intensity on both the offensive and defensive ends of the floor at pulled away with the 18-11 advantage to take the 55-41 final victory.

The Trojans put three players in double figures, with Brandon Oakes leading the team with 18 points on the night, including seven of 11 from two point range and one of two from behind the arc. Oakes also hit one of two free throws, had one assist and two steals. Brendan Soucie continued his strong play on the season, hitting sixteen points on six of 14 shooting and four of six free throws. He also swept the boards for 12 rebounds on the night, four offensive and six defensive, he also had an assist, two blocked shots and two steals on the night.

The final Trojan player to hit for double figures was Seth Jones who was five of six from the field for 10 points. He had five rebounds, four assists and three steals to go along with his point total.

The Vikings were lead in scoring by Skye Mills with 13 points on one for three shooting from the field, and three of five from behind the arc, along with two for two from the free throw line. Sam Leach was the only other Central Heights player to hit for double figures on four of five from two point range and one of seven from three point range for 11 points on the night.

As a team the Trojans shot 53% from the field on 21 for 40 attempts. They were a cold one for eight from beyond the arc and shot 10 for 16 free throws for 63%. The Trojans had 26 rebounds on the night, nine offensive and 17 defensive and held a two rebound advantage over the Vikings. The team had 13 assists and only four turnovers to go along with 10 steals.

Central Heights hit 13 of 29 from the field for 45% and were 4 of 16 from three point range. The Vikings shot only five free throws and made three for 60%. They grabbed eight offensive and 16 defensive rebounds, along with 11 assists and nine turnovers.

“There’s really not a whole lot to say about this game,” said Trojans Head Coach Darren Soucie. “I thought we did some good things with our press in the first half.”

The Trojans will return to action on Friday, February 5, 2010 as they travel to Garnett to take on the Anderson County Bulldogs in another Pioneer League contest.
