Spring Hill hands Trojans first defeat

The game of basketball usually boils down to a game of offensive and defensive runs, and the championship game of the Ike Cearfoss Invitational Tournament at Central Heights Saturday night, December 12, 2009 was no different. The Osawatomie Trojans and the Spring Hill Broncos were locked in a nip and tuck battle through the first half of the game, when the Broncos went on a 12-0 run to end the half, turning a one point Trojan lead into an 11 point Bronco lead. It was a lead the Trojans would not be able to overcome as the Broncos handed the Trojans their first loss by a 70-65 score.

WLH0141 The Trojans would not go quietly though, as, after being held to just two point in the first half, those coming near the middle of the first quarter, Brendan Soucie did his best to bring the Trojans back, erupting for 20 points in the second half, bringing the Trojans to within one point lat in the game, but Osawatomie could never regain the lead, and the Broncos were able to hold on for the victory.

With Soucie being held in check during the first half, the Trojans relied on Seth Jones, Jacob Vail and Tyler Wright to keep them in the game, even giving the Trojans their only two leads of the game at 18-17, 20-19 and 22-21, the last lead coming just before the Broncos went on their 12-0 run to end the half.

The Broncos opened the game on a 7-2 run, before Jones and Vail hit three baskets to pull the Trojans back to a 9-8 deficit. The Broncos were able to push the lead back to three at the end of the first quarter 15-12. Mitch Watson pushed the Bronco lead back to five with a basket to open the second quarter, but Brandon Oaks, Dylon Needham, Jones and Wright helped the Trojans go on a 10-6 run to take their 22-21 lead. From that point, the Broncos got a basket from Nathan Stiles, a trey from Austin Miller, a bucket from Eric Kahn and then a three pointer and a field goal from Jordan Miller and the Broncos took an 11 point 33-22 halftime lead.

Whatever was holding Soucie back in the first half, went away after the intermission, as he came out and put up 12 of his 20 second half points in the third period as the Trojans sliced the Spring Hill lead to seven points at 52-45. About the only thing that Soucie didn’t do right in the quarter was miss a couple of free throws, as he was a force on both ends of the court with timely rebounding and tough defense around the basket.

Vail and Jones each kicked in four point during the quarter and the Trojans were right back in the game as the fourth quarter began. Soucie, Jones and Brandon Oaks took the Trojans on a 9-4 run to cut the Bronco lead to three at 56-63, prompting Spring Hill time out with five and a half minutes to play. Jones and Vail hit baskets after a bucket by Nick Gilliland to pull the Trojans within one at 58-57. The Trojans would pull to within one again with just over two minutes to play, but that would be as close as they would come, and the Broncos were able to push the lead back to seven at 70-63 before Soucie hit his 19th and 20th points of the half to make the finals score 70-65.

The Trojans were lead in scoring by Soucie with 22 points, followed by Vail with 16 and Jones with 12. Miller lead the Broncos with 18 points connecting on nine of eleven from the free throw line, Stiles added 16 points and Watson connected for 11 points for the Broncos.
