Week Ten - Regional Playoffs

Independence (8-2) @ Paola (7-3)

The Panthers took out their frustrations from the mudbowl against Louisburg on a decent Chanute team on Tuesday night. The Blue Comets had a nicely balanced attack and featured one of the best passing games in the area. The Panthers completely shut down the Comet rushing attack, forced a number of turnovers and dominated the game from start to finish. Independence represents the second straight Southeast Kansas league foe for the Panthers, and it's still not clear as to the overall strength of SEKL football this year. This game is at Paola, and the Panthers are on a roll.

Bill's Pick - Paola -- Jim's Pick - Paola (21-7)

Columbus (8-2) @ Louisburg (9-1)

Columbus comes into Louisburg as the second place team in the Southeast Kansas League with an 8-2 record. With the Paola Panthers easily taking out SEKL Champion last week on the road at Chanute, one has to question the overall strength of the SEKL this year. This question will be answered by the end of the night, as Paola will host third place Independence in an all Frontier League / SEK League regional matchup in Miami County. Look for the Wildcats to post another victory and move on to face the Holton/Bishop Miege winner.

Bill's Pick - Louisburg -- Jim's Pick - Louisburg (28-14)

Holton (10-0) @ Bishop Miege (8-2)

Holton is the traditional power in Northeast Kansas Football, but the Wildcats were pushed to the limit in district this year by Hiawatha (13-12) and Jefferson West (16-13), while Bishop Miege gets the luxury of playing for a 4A Football title while classified this year as a 5A School. This is a clash of the titans so to speak, as Brooks Barta's Holton Wildcats and Tim Grunhart's Miege Stags meet in Kansas City. The winner of this game will be the Louisburg Wildcats next opponent if the 'Cats make it past Columbus in their game.

Bill's Pick - Holton -- Jim's Pick - Miege (21-7)

Eudora (8-2) @ Jefferson West (7-3)

If you just look at records, you'd give the nod in this game to the Frontier League's third place team, the Eudora Cardinals. But when you look a little deeper, you find Jeff West may not be a pushover either. Two of the Tigers three losses have come to Holton (10-0 -- see above) and Abilene (9-1 and still playing in the "West" part of the the 4A Bracket). This may come down to homefield advantage -- which favors Jeff West. The winner of this game awaits Paola if the Panthers get past Independence.

Bill's Pick - Jeff West -- Jim's Pick - Eudora (21-14)

Schlagle (6-3) @ Gardner (9-0)

The Gardner Trailblazers get a couple of weeks to breath before a projected rematch of a classic game between Gardner and Aquinas. This week Schlagle is the next victim in the Blazer sights, then comes the winner of the Topeka Seaman vs. Sumner Academy matchup. Aquinas must make it past Mill Valley and the winner of the Turner and Shawnee Heights game, but if the brackets play out, Friday, November 20 should see a re-match between the Saints and Blazers for the right to face Hutchinson in the state championship game. If the Blazers get that far, that should be a heck of a football game.

Bill's Pick - Gardner -- Jim's Pick - Gardner (48-0)

Pigskin Picks of the Week

Each week we're going to look into our "crystal ball" so to speak and try and give a quick overview of the games on tap in the Frontier League and Pioneer League. We'll quickly break down the game as we see it and go out on a limb and pick a winner. We're not going to be so bold as to predict a score, just looking for the winner may tax our brains to the limit. We hope you enjoy our "Pigskin Picks of the Week."
