Parsons sends Chanute home 11-5

The Parsons All-Stars kept their tournament hopes alive, by downing Chanute 11-5 in the first consolation bracket game of the day on Saturday in the Kansas State 14U Babe Ruth Baseball Tournament in Osawatomie.

WLH0101 Parsons opened the game with Craig Beacherl reaching base on an error and coming around to score on a single by Riley O'Brien in the top of the first inning. Chanute kept things interesting in the bottom of the first, as Keithi Marquardt and Justin Hantel lead off the game with singles, with both scoring to give Chanute a 2-1 lead after one inning.

Quintin Hammer lead off the Parsons second with a single and then came around to score to tie the score at two, and after Chanute was retired in order in the bottom of the second, the game went to the third inning with the score tied at two each. Chanunte regained the lead in the third as Marquardt and Hantel again combined for singles and runs scored.

Parsons answered by scoring one run in the third and three in the fourth to open a 6-4 lead after four. Chanute was held scoreless in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, while Parsons tacked on three more runs in the fifth and single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to increase the lead to 11-4. Chanute scored its final run in the seventh making the final score 11-5.

The loss ended Chanute's run in the state tournament. With the victory, Parsons advanced in the consolation bracket to take on Wellington in the first game of the day on Sunday.

Southwest outlasts Mustangs 8-7

The Salina Mustangs and the Soutwest All-Stars slugged it out in the consolation bracket of the Kansas State 14U Babe Ruth Baseball Tournament in Osawatomie on Saturday, August 1, 2009.

WLH0269 Salina broke on top, scoring a run in the top if the first, but Southwest countered with three runs in the bottom of the first, as J.D. Howell, Qunin Kendrick and Clay Gilbert all scored for Southwest.

The Mustangs sent four to the plate in the second, but were unable to score, and in the bottom of the inning. Southwest increased their lead to 7-1 as Braven Phelps, Kendrick, Gilbert, and Colby Overton all scored to give Southwest a commanding lead.

Salina was not to be denied though, as they countered with good defense and a three run third inning to pull to within three at 7-4 after three innings. Neither team scored in the fourth, and then the Mustangs scored three runs in the fifth inning to knot the score at seven all. Neither team was able to score though the sixth or seventh innings and the game went to extra innings knotted at seven. Both teams sent four batters to the plate in the eighth an both left runners stranded at first base. Salina went down in order in the ninth on two strike outs and a grounder to third. In the Southwest half of the ninth, Kiato Sosa doubled and scored the winning run on a singel by Damien Chavez.

The win moves Southwest on in the consolation bracket to a game against the Salina American Sluggers in the second game on Sunday, the loss drops the Mustangs from the tournament.

Ottawa shuts out Sluggers 13-0

The Ottawa All-Stars completely dominated the Salina America Sluggers on Saturday evening in the Kansas State 14U Babe Ruth Baseball Tournament in Osawatomie. Ottawa shut out the Suggers 13-0, limiting Salina to just three hits, and allowing only three men to reach base in the game.

WLH00961 Ottawa used big first and third innings to put the game away. In the first, Jordan Morton lead off with a single, Taylor Graf walked and Kaden Shaffer doubled before Turner Roth grounded out for the first out of the inning. Isaac Carter walked and Greyson LaPant doubled before Zach Williams popped out. Ethan Jackson waled and Dillon Boeh reached on an error before Morton ended the inning on a fly ball to second. In all five runners scored in the inning and Ottaw had a comfortable 5-0 lead.

In the third inning, Ottawa send eleven men to the plate, scoring six runs on two hits and stranding two and in the process breaking the game wide open. Morton, Graf, Shaffer, LaPlant, Tyler Ratliff and Parker Finch all scored runs for Ottawa.

Ottawa closed out the scoring and the game in the bottom of the fourth inning scring two more runs to make the score 13-0.

The win moved Ottawa into the winners bracket final against Osawatomie in a game set for Sunday at 5:30. The loss dropped the Sluggers to the consoation bracket for a game against the Southwest All Stars also on Sunday.

Oz one-hits Wellington in 11-0 victory

The Osawatomie All-Stars continued their winning ways in the Kansas State 14U Babe Ruth Baseball Tournament played in Oz, as they played to a one-hit shut-out of the Wellington All Stars Saturday night.

WLH0781 The Oz. Stars were in no danger in this game, as they scored three runs in the first inning, one in the second, two in the third, one in the fourth and closed out the game with four more in the fifth to take the shut-out win.

Trever Burkdoll had a single and three walks to go along with three runs scored to lead the Osawatomie team. Dustin Ohlmeier had two hits and scored twice, Austin Chisam, Joe Pomatto, Brayden Miller, Noah Miller and Cody Applegarth all scored runs for Osawatomie.

In all Oz racked up 11 rurns on eight hits and left five men on base in the game. Wellington managed only three base runners in the game, only to advancing to scoring position.

The win moves Osawatomie to the winners bracket final game on Sunday against Ottawa. With the loss, Wellington drops to the consolation bracket and will play Parsons in the first game on Sunday.
