Raiders make quick work of Paola
After a disappointing 1-2 record the previous weekend at Baxter Springs, the Oawatomie Raiders rolled into Paola and shrugged off a quick pre-game rain shower to take a pair of games from the Paola American Legion squad at Russell Field in Paola.
The Raiders jumped all over Paola early and rolled to an 11-1 victory in game one and then followed up with a 6-0 shut-out in the night cap.
Osawatomie left little doubt in the opening game as they put three runs on the board in the first inning, and added two more in the second, three in the fourth and thre in the fifth for the victory.
In the first inning the Raiders got runs from Austin Chisam, Travis Marsh and Austin Porter as they opened a 3-0 lead on Paola. Chisam opened the game with by reaching on an error, and Marsh was also safe on a fielders choice. Daine Needham advanced the runners before Porter walked, loading the bases. The Raiders scored their runs without a hit, as Chance Sinclair and Cody McNutt were hit by pitches and Seth Jones reached on an error to give the Raiders their three run advantage.
After Paola put a run on the board in the bottom if the first, the Raiders went back to work and with two out, got back to back singles from Marsh and Daine Needham before Porter was hit by a pitch loading the bases. Sinclair laced a single to left field scoring two and giving the Raiders a 5-1 advantage.
Neither team made any noise in the third inning, but the Raiders got back on the board in the fourth, as Porter singled with one out and then scored on a Sinclair home run which gave the Raiders a 7-1 lead. Jones reached on an error and came around to score the Raiders third run of the inning and at the end of three and a half innings the Raiders were firmly in control at 8-1.
In the fifth Chisam led off and reached safely on an error, Marsh doubled, scoring Chisam, Daine Needham also reached on an error and then Marsh and Needham scored on consecutive singles from Porter, Sinclair and Jones giving the Raiders an 11-1 lead and the victory.
The drumbeat continued in the second game, as Daine Needham reached base in the first as the throw from short pulled the first baseman off the bag on a ground ball that would have been the Raiders third out, but after a stolen base moved him into scoring position, Needham was picked off second as he was trying to steal third.
The Raiders didn’t let anything slip in the second inning, as they used a Seth Jones, one out double to left and a Cody McNutt double to score the game’s first run and then, after a Mitch Tally strike out got a Drew Needham single to center to score McNutt and grab a 2-0 lead.
The Raiders worked around a Paola rally in the bottom of the second, getting out of a bases loaded jam with one out to keep the game at 2-0 heading into the third inning. Osawatomie all but put the game out of reach in the third as they got a one out walk to Johnson followed by back to back doubles from Daine Needham and Porter to start a rally that saw Johnson, Needham and Porter all cross the plate and give the Raiders a 5-0 lead.
Osawatomie picked up an insurance run in the top of the fourth, as Johnson doubled to left center and eventually scored on a double steal after a Sinclair walk giving the Raiders their final advantage of 6-0 in the five inning, wood bat game.
The Raiders were scheduled to play at Baldwin on Thursday, June 17, 2010, but that game has been postponed to July because of the John Brown Jamboree Parade in Osawatomie the same evening.
The Raiders will open play in the round robin event bright and early Saturday morning with back to back games against Linn County and the Lansing Cubs at 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m., and will close out the first day of the tournament with a rematch game against Paola at 6:00 that same evening. The Raiders get the early match up again on Sunday with an 8:00 a.m. game against the K.C. Blaze before waiting to see where they place for the tournament championship games which will be played at 4:00 and 6:00 that evening.
